First used in space exploration, evacuated tube heat pipe collector technology was invented about 10 years ago. There are millions of installations in Europe and Asia and the technology has proven to be reliable, dependable and durable.
In an evacuated tube heat pipe collector, the heat pipe absorber is located in a double walled glass tube. A vacuum is formed in the space between the two walls of the glass tube. A vacuum is an extremely efficient insulator; probably best know for its application in Thermos containers. A heat pipe collector incorporates a fluid, which begins to vaporize even at low temperatures. The steam rises in the individual heat pipes and warms up the carrier fluid in the manifold by means of a heat exchanger. The condensed liquid then flows back into the base of the heat pipe. Several single tubes connected to each other via manifold, make up the solar collector.
